For a comedic book, there's an awful lot of violence in Joseph Andrews. Between Parson Adams and his crabstick and Joseph and his cudgel, we wouldn't want to mess with this crew. While we'd like to see these dudes as the defenders of justice, Adams is often the one to throw the first punch. Joseph Andrews, Henry Fielding's first full-length novel, depicts the many colourful and often hilarious adventures of a comically chaste servant. After being sacked for spurning the lascivious Lady Booby, Joseph takes to the road, accompanied by his beloved Fanny Goodwill, a much-put-upon foundling girl, and Parson Adams, a man often duped and humiliated, but still a model of Christian.

The first is Samuel Richardson’s Pamela (), an epistolary novel about a virtuous maid-servant; Fielding detested the novel and the moral system implicit in it, and both Joseph Andrews and his previous effort in fiction, Shamela, are spoofs of Richardson’s novel.

He lists several biographies, including those of Colley Cibber and Pamela Andrews, as examples of male virtue and female chastity. Fielding reinforces his opening argument and introduces his own work by remarking that it was by keeping his sister's excellent example of virtue before him that Joseph Andrews was able to preserve his own purity.
